The debut issue of Dopin' Dan contains several amusing and often drug-related tales of modern military life, including contributions from other artists (e.g., Willy Murphy, Gary Hallgren, Shary Flenniken, Bobby London.

There are four printings of Dopin' Dan #1, and it is currently unknown how many copies were produced during any of those print runs. The first two printings are both from Last Gasp, have 50-cent cover prices, and are believed to be indistinguishable from each other. The 3rd printing is published by Keith Green (Industrial Reality) and has a 75-cent cover price. The 4th printing is published by Last Gasp and has a $1.25 cover price.
The logo on the front cover's upper left corner of the first three issues is for Cocoanut Comix, an imprint related to the Air Pirates collective, whose membership included Ted Richards. The first three issues of Dopin' Dan, though distributed by Last Gasp, were actually Air Pirates collective publications, as were Dan O'Neill's Comics and Stories, Merton of the Movement, Left Field Funnies, and The Dirty Duck Book.
