American Splendor #9 features two terrific stories; the lead story about a friend of Harvey's who visits Cleveland one weekend from Chicago. Harvey expects to have a great time but the visit turns out to be “A Semi-Bummer Weekend.” The other story is “Free Ride”, which is about Harvey's rocky relationship with a Jewish co-worker. The back cover provides an introspective moment about Harvey's legacy as a writer.
It is currently unknown how many copies of this comic book were printed. Pekar was known to have printed approximately 5,000 copies of early issues of the book, which likely includes this issue, as it came out before he achieved some degree of notoriety in the national media. This issue has not been reprinted.
